Gutters Full Again? Gutter Cleaning in Atlanta
Pollen and oak tassels in spring, needles and acorns in fall, gumballs all winter. A full cleaning clears the gutters and the downspouts.
How often Atlanta gutters need cleaning
It depends more on what grows over the roof than on the calendar, so the trees are the first thing Decatur Spout asks about when you call for gutter cleaning. The Atlanta gutter calendar lays out the whole year, month by month.
- No trees over the roof
- A spring and fall check, as one gutter maker advises, and a cleaning when it finds debris.
- Oaks and other hardwoods overhead
- One cleaning in late spring once the tassels are down, and another in late fall after the leaves and acorns.
- Pines overhead
- The same two, and the fall one is bigger. Add a late-winter check if sweetgums are close.
Pollen season, sweetgum balls and fall pine drop
Georgia's pine pollen season starts in late February or early March and usually ends by late May in the north of the state, the Georgia Forestry Commission says. On March 29, 2025, Atlanta's count hit 14,801 grains per cubic meter, a record. Oaks flower over the same weeks and drop their tassels once the pollen is out, and the next rain washes both into the gutters, where they settle at the outlets.
Fall brings the heavy load. UGA Extension says most pines drop their needles then, and loblolly, Atlanta's most common tree, sheds each needle in its third year, so there's a fresh layer every autumn. Acorns come down from September through November.
Sweetgum, the city's second most common tree, holds its spiky seed balls through winter and drops them from December into April, long after the leaves are gone. Guards cut down on some of this, and the gutter guard comparison shows which designs hold up under needles.
Signs your gutters are full right now
Water spills over in an ordinary rain
When it isn't even pouring, the outlet or the downspout below it is blocked.
Something is growing up there
Grass or seedlings mean there's enough wet debris in the gutter to grow them.
The run sags between hangers
Packed, wet debris is heavy. Cleaning takes the weight off, and the crew can check the hangers it loosened.
Needles hang over the front edge
If you can see them from the yard, the gutter under them is full.
Standing water days after the rain
The water can't reach the outlet, usually because of a clog, a sag or a slope that's off.
Seeing two of those at once? Your gutters are overdue for a cleaning.

A full cleaning leaves the downspouts clear too
Scooping the gutters is half the job. Prices for the same house vary widely (the gutter cost guide shows how much), so ask for these on the call:
- Debris bagged and hauled off, not blown into the beds or left on the roof.
- Every downspout flushed, with water run through to the bottom.
- A look at hangers, slope and the roof edge while the crew is up there.
- Any buried drain line tested at the bottom of the downspout.
