Gutter hanging after a storm?

Keep people and cars out from under it, and stay off ladders while it's still blowing. Then call and say how much of the run is down. The storm damage page covers the first hour.

Decatur Spout

Gutters Sized for Atlanta Rain and Pine Needles

Decatur Spout sets up gutter installation for houses across metro Atlanta, with guards, repairs, cleaning and storm work on the same number. These are the conditions a gutter here has to carry, and they're why the size, the guard and the downspouts get picked house by house.

The visit

From the First Call to Water Going Where It Should

Your part is the call and a yes or no on the price. The rest happens in this order.

Call {{TODO: phone}}
  1. You call

One story or two, the trouble with the old gutters, and which trees hang over the roof. That's enough to set up the visit.

  2. The measuring visit

A {{TODO: confirm partner credentials for metro Atlanta (Georgia license status for gutter work, insurance)}} installer measures every run, checks the fascia behind the old gutters and finds each downspout a spot where its water can drain away.

  3. The price, line by line

Ask for it in writing, itemized: footage, gutter size, downspouts, guards and old-gutter removal. You only pay for work you agreed to.

  4. The new gutters go up

Old runs come off, soft boards get replaced, new runs are formed and hung, and the downspouts are set to carry water clear of the house.

Atlanta Houses and the Gutters They Need

The age of a house and the town it sits in shape what goes up. Here's what that means, house by house.

1920s bungalows in Decatur

Decatur was largely built out in the 1920s with Craftsman bungalows, and its local historic districts ask for a certificate before material changes. Old wood fascia and that review both come before a new run goes up.

Brick ranches from the 1960s and '70s

Across DeKalb, about 29 percent of homes date from 1960 to 1979. If the gutters on one of them are the originals, they've long outlasted the roughly 20 years aluminum gets in the builders' study.

Houses with many gables and valleys

Every gable that meets the main roof makes a valley, and each valley pours two slopes into one gutter corner. In heavy rain those corners can overflow unless the gutter and downspouts are sized for them.

Victorian houses in historic districts

In the Norcross Historic District, replacement gutters should match the originals, and PVC pipe can't stand in for a gutter or downspout. In Marietta's districts, a same-place, same-size swap needs no certificate.

Copper half-round suits an older house's trim and lasts more than 50 years in the builders' study, as long as every hanger, strap and downspout below it is copper or brass too.

What New Gutters Fix on an Atlanta House

Two or more of these on one house usually means new gutters, not another patch.

A downspout offsets back to the wall, runs down it and turns into an extension that carries water away from the foundation, over red clay soil. • Water sheets over the front edge in a summer storm

A gutter too small for the roof, or with too few downspouts, overflows even when it's clean. Sizing for downpours

  • Water lands against the foundation

A downspout that empties at the corner drops a whole slope of roof onto a few square feet of ground. On bare red clay, the splash breaks the surface apart and seals it over, so less of the water soaks in. Downspouts and drainage

  • Old sectional gutters drip at every joint

Gutters sold in 10-foot lengths are joined on the wall, and each joint depends on sealant. A one-piece run has joints only at the corners, the ends and the downspout outlets. One-piece gutters

  • Runs lean off the house or sag in the middle

Spikes driven through the gutter face can work loose, and soft wood holds them poorly. Ask for screwed hidden hangers set into sound fascia; one maker builds them to resist loosening. Fascia repair

  • Needles and leaves pack them every fall

Most of Atlanta's tree cover sits over single-family lots. Under loblollies and oaks, a guard picked for the debris cuts down the ladder trips. Gutter guards

Sizing

Should Atlanta Gutters Be 5-Inch or 6-Inch?

For a big or steep roof, or a long run with one outlet, 6-inch is the safer pick. It's rolled from 15-inch coil instead of 11-3/4-inch, holds more water, and takes the larger 3x4 downspout. Plenty of smaller roofs do fine with 5-inch.

Sizing starts from the hardest five minutes of rain a roof is likely to see, the burst in the numbers up top. The gutter size guide turns that into gutter and downspout sizes for your roof, with a calculator.

The answer comes from the roof itself: how much of it drains to each run, how steep it is and whether a valley pours into one corner. The one-piece gutter page covers gauge and hangers.

Pricing

What Moves the Price of New Gutters

Per-foot ranges by material, add-ons for height and the guard tiers are in the gutter cost guide.

  • Feet of roof edge

Gutters are priced by the linear foot, so a long ranch with gutters on every side can cost more than a two-story with gutters on two.

  • Height

A second story means taller ladders or staging and slower work, which raises the per-foot price.

  • Downspouts

Each downspout, elbow and extension is its own line. Valleys and long runs call for more of them.

  • Fascia repairs

Rotted boards found behind the old gutters are priced per board or per foot.

  • Guards and material

Guards carry their own per-foot price, and copper or half-round costs more than K-style aluminum.
